Solapur is situated in southern-western Maharashtra at the boundary of Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka which is also known as textile city. Solapur’s textile business is famous from 20th century. Some famous names in textile industries were Juni Mill, Laxmi-Vishnu Mill, Narsing Girji Mill, Jamshree Mill.
Juni Mill was one of the Asia’s largest mill at that time. It has in house power generation plant & excess electricity generated is supplied to whole Solapur city. Now all the mills except Jamshree are liquidated due to owner-labor disputes & highly interference of union leaders, political leaders & gang wars.
Now a day thousands of small handloom mills are running in good condition. Their main products are chadders, bed sheets, pillow covers, Turkish towels, napkins, track suits for sportsman etc. All the products are famous all over the world. Some of them are only export their production.
Mean time Solapury chadders (The chadders are famous as Solapury chadders) are introduced at Lakme fashion show by famous designer James Ferreira. This is great & energetic achievement for textile industry. And that incident forces me to publish this post. The local MLA opposes to use chadders for such fashion shows. In my opinion there is nothing illegal to use chadders for such fashion shows. I think it is because of generation gap.
